Mally Mallinson Seminar

Mally helped us to develop our ideas further this afternoon. After deciding to go with the Restrictions theme, we discussed a range of ways that it could be interpreted. We could look at restrictions in society (laws, religious/ spiritual, political, social views), create restrictions in our creative process (materials, time, senses), look at how necessary restrictions are and what would be the result of having no restrictions or how we feel restricted as artists. We began to think about what exhibition space we think would be best suited, and a darker, space restricting room was mentioned. The idea that the installation of the exhibition itself could restrict movement for the viewer, perhaps even the use of lighting or stud walls could restrict how the artwork is viewed. Mally introduced us to using minimalism or maximalism to portray our theme too. We also discussed the appropriateness of having a soundtrack for the exhibition.

We toyed with the idea of creating a catalogue as a group solely for the exhibition itself that would include the press release, brief information on the artwork, images and a floor plan. We also discussed possible advertising techniques that would tie in well with the theme. We thought of minimalistic posters, or small ones, as well as thinking of using other mediums like ribbons to advertise. We also briefly discussed how we could go about distributing them on campus.

One thing he made clear was that we needed to have a clear, concise meaning for Restriction that we all understood and that we need to make sure our fixed concept comes across in our exhibition proposal.
