Becky told us that she'd discussed the possibility of using the space downstairs, but still needs a reply from the other tutors. Luckily Ali has offered to create the risk assessment for the exhibition as she's done them before.
We discussed the idea of our exhibition
being a sensory experience, and decided to look into using candles as a source
of light that would be given to visitors to the exhibition. We also thought about the possibility of printing the exhibition
title onto the candle. Personally I wasn't too sure about the practicality of candles, but the rest of the group seemed quite excited about the idea so we'll just have to see if it is allowed when we have to present our proposal.
We thought about the idea of visitors signing a disclaimer
on entry to the exhibition to stop them from talking about what they see, and everyone seemed to like the idea of a secrets/ confession box, where guests could go and write
out their own confessions and stick them up (although I'm still rather skeptical about the success of it). Although I did agree that we should leave
the pieces of work anonymous and perhaps just put artist statements outside of
the main exhibition space.
After discussing our plans for our own pieces of work for the exhibition I think we all are starting to feel more confident about it. I'm still not completely sure about whether or not I should go with a sculptural piece, but I know that the thought process behind the work is going to fit in well with the exhibition.
Through discussing our ideas, we realised that all our work related to
restrictions of the mind or body and that we all wanted to take a personal,
emotional, approach when we create our artwork. “Do not judge, we’re all the
same” led us to changing the name of the exhibition to ‘Behind Closed Doors:
Personal Confessions’ although we did toy with ‘Dirty Little Secrets’. I'm glad we went with 'Behind Closed Doors' as I think 'Dirty Little Secrets' would have provoked thoughts of a more sexual nature than what we all intended.
We toyed with the idea of using audio, and Ali explained her idea of recording people confessing and playing it back in the exhibition. I'm not convinced that this would be as easily done as the rest of the group seemed to think, especially due to the nature of the exhibition was supposedly anonymous and so recording and being able to recognise people's voices would take away from our intentions. We'll have to wait and see if this actually comes into existence.
Ali's going to write up all our intentions into a proposal that we hope will be approved by Stephen and Anna tomorrow.
